World Malaria Day is Monday, April 25, 2016. This year’s theme is End Malaria for Good.
Here are a few facts about malaria:
- In 2015:
- There were 214 million cases of malaria globally – 438,000 deaths globally
- 90% of deaths occur in Sub-Saharan Africa
- 78% of deaths were children under five
According to the World Health Organization’s World Malaria Report 2015, “There has been a major decline in global malaria cases and deaths since 2000. Progress was made possible through the massive expansion of effective tools to prevent and treat malaria, such as insecticide-treated mosquito nets, diagnostic testing and anti-malarial medicines.”
Challenges continue – about 3.2 billion people – almost half of the world’s population – are at risk of malaria. Since 2000, malaria has cost sub-Saharan Africa US$ 300 million each year for case management alone. Millions of people are still not accessing the services need to prevent and treat malaria.
According to WHO, “World Malaria Day offers an annual opportunity to highlight advances in malaria control and to commit to continued investment and action to accelerate progress against this deadly disease.”
