Blood connects us all is the theme of this year’s World Blood Donor Day. The World Health Organization’s (WHO) objectives for this campaign include providing a wider public awareness for regular blood donation; inspiring those who have not donated as of yet; to encourage countries to thank their regular, voluntary, unpaid blood donors and; to persuade countries to commit to self-sufficiency in blood supply.
Key Facts from the World Health Organization
- 108 million blood donations are collected globally (50% from high-income countries)
- 62 countries collect 100% of their blood supply from voluntary, unpaid blood donors
- Blood donation by 1% of the population can meet a nation’s most basic requirement for blood
