The Joint Commission recently announced new Medication Management standard, MM.09.01.01 for hospitals, critical access hospitals, and nursing care centers. This new standard addresses antimicrobial stewardship and becomes effective January 1, 2017. According to the Joint Commission the antimicrobial stewardship standard for Joint Commission–accredited ambulatory care organizations and office-based surgery practices is still in development. Note that CMS is in the process of developing a Condition(s) of Participation (CoP) on antimicrobial stewardship for hospitals and nursing homes
On June 29, 2016 StayAlert! published a notice on TJC’s release of prepublication requirements for standard MM.09.01.01. That notice included an Antimicrobial Stewardship Program Implementation Plan based on the elements of performance for this standard. Another element of performance for MM.09.01.01 requires hospitals, critical access hospitals and nursing care centers to use organization-approved protocols as a part of their antimicrobial stewardship program. TJC’s examples of protocols include Antibiotic Formulary Restrictions, Assessment of Appropriateness of Antibiotics for Community-Acquired Pneumonia, Assessment of Appropriateness of Antibiotics for Urinary Tract Infections and Care of the Patient with Clostridium difficile (c.-diff). Please see the standard for additional examples of protocols.
This notice included example policies for Restricted Antimicrobial Approval and Dispensing and Clostridium Difficile.
