The National Patient Safety Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating a world where patients and those who care for them are free from harm. NPSF is the founding organization of the United for Safety Patient Campaign which culminates each year with Patient Safety Awareness Week designed to mark a dedicated time and a platform to increase awareness about patient safety among health professionals and the public. This year, Patient Safety Awareness Week is March 13-19.
The United for Safety Patient Campaign has developed a number of ways for health care professionals and health care organizations to participate in National Patient Safety Awareness Week, including but not limited to the following:
- Take the Pledge for Patient Safety: The United for Patient Safety campaign is asking health care professionals to take a pledge to stand united in striving to reduce harm in patient care. These pledges underscore the important action each can take in their commitment to safety across the care continuum.
- Register for the free NPSF Webinar on March 17th – Patient Safety is a Public Health Issue. During this webinar participants will hear leaders from key governmental agencies – AHRQ, CMS, CDC – discuss patient safety and what is being done to advance it on a national level.
- Wear a Patient Gown: This year health care leaders and administrators are challenged to step into the role of the patient by wearing a patient gown to mark Patient Safety Awareness Week. According to Tejal K. Gandhi, MD, MPH, CPPS, president and chief executive officer of NPSF “We are all patients, after all. We want leaders to demonstrate a commitment to listen to the patient’s voice and strive for patient safety and the reduction of harm.”
- Use Social Media: Help spread the word on Facebook and Twitter, using NPSF sample posts (or create your own).
- Use the Campaign Materials: NPSF has various downloadable materials available to help mark Patient Safety Awareness Week.
