Breast Cancer Awareness Month is underway and we’re urging everyone to help raise awareness throughout October. This year, over 250,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, however, with proper awareness and early detection, successful treatment is possible.
Everyone should know how to detect early signs and symptoms of breast cancer by performing self breast exams on a routine basis. If you do notice any sudden lumps, bumps, changes in the appearance of your breasts/nipples, clear or bloody discharge, contact your healthcare provider immediately. However, it’s also important to note that many women with breast cancer don’t exhibit any symptoms at all, and regular screenings should remain an important part of any individual’s healthcare routine.
For women at average risk of breast cancer between the ages of 40 and 45, you have the option to have an annual mammogram as a part of your preventive healthcare routine. Women 45 to 54 should receive mammograms every year; and women 55 and older can choose to receive mammograms every other year, but it’s recommended to maintain an annual schedule so you can stay aware of your health. Although rare, men can get breast cancer too. The lifetime risk for U.S. men is about 1 in 1,000.
Join us this October and help spread awareness of breast cancer. Learn more about what early detection should look like in your life.
