On September 9, 2015, Amanda Valeur and Jennifer Carter-Scott from MCN Foundation, along with a team of dedicated volunteers, travelled to Ethiopia, Uganda and Kenya to meet with MCN Foundation partners to align goals, conduct trainings and garner a greater understanding of what is possible with the Foundation’s support.
We will be posting blogs over the next few weeks of the MCN Foundation’s team travels so that we can share what the Foundation is doing to help those who do not have access to proper healthcare.
Day 3 – Children
Giz, Radiet’s brother picked us up for lunch at their home on New Year’s Day. We were picked up in a taxi by Giz and brought to the bottom of their street which is a rough dirt road with large ruts dug by rain water from the rainy season. Their home was so lovely, while very humble they prepared a feast for us! Traditional Ethiopia food with a full coffee ceremony!
Presents for the whole family were given out after our feast! This family is the most amazing group of people, so generous, courageous and grateful. We brought with us a suitcase of clothing, shoes, and a computer, as well as a smart phone for the family. These items are difficult to get and costly – especially for a young mother with a five-year-old child.
Valeur almost lost his mind with all the presents! He was so excited. We brought him many sizes of clothing so he could grow into things and have clothes for the next few years. I am not even sure they have room for all the clothes we bought him! He was more than thrilled!
The most exciting part of today was playing with and being entertained by Valeur. He ran around in his New Year’s clothing – a full white outfit with African tribal trim – screaming, laughing and pulling on all of us. His English is awesome! And his timing was comedic! From “Oh my god,” to “I don’t care” and “What’s up man” – he was a laugh a minute. He can say his ABC’s and count in English – we are very impressed and so proud of the little man he is becoming!
Really the pictures tell the story and the joy…
