The Joint Commission (TJC) has added a new National Patient Safety Goal (NPSG) for Long Term Care organizations, effective January 1, 2017. NPSG.07.06.01 requires Long Term Care (LTC) organizations, accredited by TJC, to implement evidence-based practices to prevent indwelling catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI). This NPSG is already in effect for hospitals and critical access hospitals.
Requirements of NPSG.07.06.01 for LTC organizations include:
- Providing education, on the prevention of CAUTIs, to appropriate staff and independent practitioners at the time of hire and at times established by the organization
- Providing CAUTI education to patients and families
- Developing policies and procedures addressing criteria for the use of, insertion of and maintenance of an indwelling urinary catheter
- Performance Improvement: measure and monitor CAUTI policies, procedures and outcomes
