Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recently summarized findings from two research studies, N95 Respirator Use during Advanced Pregnancy and Effect of External Airflow Resistive Load on Postural and Exercise-associated Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Responses in Pregnancy.
Women make up about one-half of the US workforce and, at any given time, about 10% of those female workers of child-bearing age (15–44 years of age) will be pregnant. There have been reports of pregnant women complaining of difficulty breathing while wearing a N95 filtering facepiece respirators (FFR). NIOSH conducted the research to gain a better understanding of the safety of N95 use by pregnant workers.
