September is Sepsis Awareness Month

KNOW THE RISKS. SPOT THE SIGNS. ACT FAST.

Did you know that each year, at least 1.7 million Americans develop sepsis, and nearly 270,000 die as a result? Did you know that sepsis is the 3rd leading cause of death in the United States? Did you know that 80% of sepsis deaths could be prevented with rapid diagnosis and treatment?

It’s About Time is a national initiative to raise awareness of sepsis and the urgent need to seek treatment when symptoms are recognized.

Temperature – Higher or lower than normal

Infection – May have signs and symptoms of an infection

Mental Decline – Confused, sleepy, difficult to rouse

Extremely Ill – “I feel like I might die”, severe pain or discomfort

Everyone should be aware of the symptoms of sepsis and the steps to take if sepsis is suspected.

The CDC’s Get Ahead of Sepsis offers educational materials for healthcare professionals and patients. The CDC encourages healthcare professionals to:

Know the signs and symptoms of sepsis
Identity and treat patients early
Act fast if you suspect sepsis
Know your organization’s existing guidance for diagnosing and managing sepsis
Prevent infections by following infection control practices (e.g. hand hygiene, catheter removal) and ensuring patients receive recommended vaccines.
Educate your patients and their families about:
- Preventing infections
- Keeping scrapes and wounds clean
- Managing chronic conditions
- Recognizing early signs and symptoms of worsening infection and sepsis and seeking immediate care if signs and symptoms are present
If you suspect sepsis:
- Immediately alert the doctor or nurse in charge if it is not you.
- Start antibiotics as soon as possible, in addition to other therapies appropriate for the patient.
- Check patient progress frequently. Reassess antibiotic therapy in 24 to 48 hours to stop or adjust therapy if needed. Be sure antibiotic type, dose and duration are correct.
