The American Nurses Association (ANA) has designated 2017 as the “Year of the Healthy Nurse.” This year’s theme is, “Nursing: the Balance of Mind, Body, and Spirit.” In support of the “Year of the Healthy Nurse,” ANA is offering a free webinar, A Nurse’s Guide to Preventing Compassion Fatigue Moral Distress and Burnout. ” It’s all about celebrating nurses like you who lead the charge for health and wellness.”
History of National Nurses Day
In 1982 President Ronald Reagan signed a proclamation on March 25, proclaiming “National Recognition Day for Nurses” to be May 6, 1982. The ANA Board of Directors expanded the recognition of nurses to a week-long celebration in 1991 ending on May 12th – Florence Nightingale’s birthday.
International Nurses Day
International Nurses Day is on Friday May 12, 2017. This year the International Council of Nurses (ICN) has chosen the theme, Nurses: A Voice to Lead, Achieving the Sustainable Developmental Goals. The INC’s hope for this campaign is to raise awareness of nursing professionals and the general public of what the Sustainable Developmental Goals are and their importance.“
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), otherwise known as the Global Goals, are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity. The 17 goals are as follows:
